The title Deconstructing Destiny came to me as I was reading X, which is certainly all about destiny. I don't necessarily believe that it exists, but I always wonder, whether I am doing things not because logic or impulse dictates, but because there is something greater, subtly guiding me. Fittingly, both of the layouts for this journal title come from the series, which is by CLAMP. 1 The first version featured Satsuki and Arashi, an opposing pair of Dragon of Earth and Dragon of Heaven, respectively. They are both quiet and withdrawn people, like myself. Satsuki is totally antisocial, preferring the company of her beloved computers to that of other humans. Arashi is less extreme, but she can be cold to others and refuses to depend on anyone else or accept their charity. The design featured their tarot cards, The Hermit and Temperance. There were two templates, one for each. I saw Satsuki as representing more analytical matters, while Arashi had more to do with emotion, and I selected the template for each entry accordingly. 2 The second design featured the Dreamgazer, Hinoto. Through her involvement in the series, I discovered another aspect of the concept of destiny in X. One could either see the future and thus be unable to change it, or one could remain ignorant and with free will. It is paradoxical, but also makes sense, in its way. |
